Reduce the Load, Not Just the Tool Weight

A lighter scissor can feel helpful. But if you use it with your arm reaching across the dog, the number on the product scale describes only a small part of the job.
The distance from your body, the direction of the load, your grip and the time spent holding the position all matter. That gives you more useful choices than simply buying the lightest tool available.
Why distance deserves its own check
For a simple static load, the turning effect around a point is force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from that point to the force's line of action. This is a moment, measured in newton-metres.
Consider an illustrative 100 g object held horizontally. Its weight is approximately 0.98 N. At a 25 cm horizontal distance from a reference point, its moment is about 0.245 Nm. At 10 cm, it is about 0.098 Nm. The object weighs exactly the same; its contribution to the moment has fallen by 60%.
This calculation includes only that object. It does not calculate the forces inside your shoulder, account for the weight of your arm or predict injury. Its useful message is narrower: changing reach can make a substantial difference without changing tool weight.
Look at the task, not a posed posture
Ask a colleague to observe a normal finishing task, with the client's permission where needed. Notice when the elbow drifts away from your body, when you lean to see a line and when a light grip becomes a sustained pinch. Do this without distracting whoever is handling the dog.
OSHA's hand-tool guidance considers wrist position, repetitive finger effort, grip and contact pressure together. Its examples come from other industries, so they should not be copied literally onto a moving animal. Separate changes you can make

One table setting need not suit every body region or every groomer. Make changes with tools safely clear of the dog. Never trade the dog's stability or comfort for a tidier-looking posture.
What grooming research adds
A 2026 questionnaire study of 180 people working in pet grooming in Taiwan reported a high burden of musculoskeletal symptoms and associations with occupational burnout. The sample was recruited by convenience and the study was cross-sectional. It supports taking work demands seriously; it does not prove that a particular scissor, table or posture will prevent an injury, or establish the prevalence in every country's grooming workforce. Choose a tool for the line you can control

Assess finger fit, the closure you can control and the working position needed for your common tasks. Pair the cutting tool with a compact checking comb so the section is organised and visible before you commit to a correction. Good preparation and a suitable sightline may remove unnecessary repetitions.
Judge the change over real work
After changing one part of the setup, review the same kind of task. Did the extended reach disappear? Did the adjustment create a new awkward position elsewhere? Keep necessary breaks in the routine; a comfortable-looking moment is not evidence that a long, repetitive task has become harmless.
Persistent pain, numbness, weakness or loss of function deserves assessment by an appropriate health professional. A tool purchase is not treatment.
